ADAM (PAST)

“Are you stupid or something?” My stepfather’s voice invades my thoughts, echoing around in my head. The fight he and my mom had this morning was really no different than any other morning. He was probably a little more cruel than usual, but in reality, the fights all just blend together. He calls her names, screams at her and she just cries or begs. This morning it was the latter.

“Ronald, please keep it down,” she says in a whisper loud enough for me to hear through the door. “You’re going to wake Adam.”

“Well, maybe it’s about time he knew that his mom was an idiot,” my stepfather says. I lay in my bed way past my alarm seething with anger from those words. If only I were bigger, may I could stand up to him without getting my ass kicked. My mom deserves so much better than that jerk.

Each time this happens, it ruins my day. I have a really hard time focusing on school. I just can’t make all this stuff that they pretend is so important matter. How am I legitimately expected to learn anything when my life at home sucks so bad?

Today in Geometry we’re talking about the Pythagorean theorem, that’s about all I know. Taking notes has been practically impossible. What is the reason we need to know how to find the measurements of triangles, anyway? When am I ever going to use this stuff? I’ll be lucky to just graduate high school; most of the time, I can barely get out of bed.

“Adam!” Mrs. Spencer interrupts my thoughts and I panic. Oh crap. I haven’t been paying attention. Please don’t ask me a question. Please don’t ask me a question. I try to send her subliminal messages to move on to the next student, but they don’t work.

“Adam, can you tell me which letter in the Pythagorean theorem represents the hypotenuse?” The minute she asks the question, she folds her arms and stands quietly at the front of the room.

Oh crap. She’s actually expecting me to answer this question. I look around the room at the other students, hoping one of them will throw me a lifeline, but none of them do. “Um….’A’?” I guess.

“No, ‘A’ is one of the legs, not the hypotenuse,” she says, clearly disappointed. One of the know-it-all students raises their hand and I’m relieved. Maybe Mrs. Spencer will let her answer the question, taking the focus off of me. Mrs. Spencer calls on her, causing relief to flood my body. She, of course, gives the correct answer. Good for you, I think sarcastically; you’ve learned a completely pointless piece of information.

Then Mrs. Spencer does something completely unexpected and turns right back to me. “Now, Adam, if you could please make sure to take notes and pay attention in class I would appreciate it. I really want to make sure you pass this class.”

Embarrassment creeps into my cheeks and they turn bright red. How could she have singled me out like this? Immediately, I realize that I have to get out of this room.
